- The most common benign intracranial tumors
- Slow growing, benign tumors that arise from the lining of the brain
- Found along the surface of the brain or along its base, where the brain rests on the surface of the skull
- Typically they are small, slow growing and discovered incidentally
- Sometimes they are detected when quite large
- They cause symptoms by growing against the brain and pushing along the brain surface, creating inflammation and swelling (edema) within the brain
- Treatment involves surgical resection when safe and possible
- If they are discovered when they are small (less than 3cm) then stereotactic radiosurgery can arrest their growth with very good results
