Pituitary Tumors

  • The pituitary is a small gland attached to the base of the brain
  • Despite its small size it controls many different hormones
  • Tumors of the pituitary are in their majority benign. They cause symptoms due to hormonal abnormalities or compression of the nerves that go to the eyes (optic nerves and chiasm)
  • Treatment typically involves surgical resection or radiation therapy
  • Surgical resection involves accessing the tumor through the nasal cavity
