Laminectomy & Decompression
- An operation for spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the spinal cord or nerve roots
- Stenosis typically causes pain, numbness, or heaviness in the legs with standing and walking, often relieved by sitting or leaning forward
- The lamina, the bony roof of the spinal canal, is removed along with thickened ligament and bone spurs to restore space for the nerves
- Recommended when symptoms limit daily activity despite conservative treatment
- Can be combined with fusion when the spine is unstable or when stenosis occurs alongside spondylolisthesis
- Most patients notice improvement in leg symptoms and walking tolerance after recovery
